Question 1

What is the best canister filter for 55 gallon tanks?

Accepted Answer

For most tanks, the Fluval 407 is my top pick because it is rated for up to 100 gallons, so a 55 gallon tank gets plenty of filtration. If you want a built in UV sterilizer, the Sunsun HW-303B is a well rated choice that costs less. Whichever you pick, aim for a flow rate of at least 220 gallons per hour.

Question 2

What size canister filter do I need for a 55 gallon tank?

Accepted Answer

Use the four times rule: the filter should move at least four times the tank volume every hour, so a 55 gallon tank needs at least 220 GPH. If the tank is heavily stocked, choose a filter rated for a bigger tank than you have.

Question 3

Can a canister filter be too strong for a 55 gallon tank?

Accepted Answer

It can push fish around if the outlet points straight at them. Most canisters have flow valves, and a spray bar spreads the flow out, so a filter rated for a larger tank is usually fine on a 55.

Question 4

Is a canister filter better than a hang on back filter for a 55 gallon tank?

Accepted Answer

Canister filters hold more media, usually filter more water and sit out of sight under the tank. Hang on back filters are cheaper and easier to clean. For a 55 gallon tank, a canister is often the better long term choice.

Question 5

How often should I clean a canister filter?

Accepted Answer

Most fish keepers clean a canister every 4 to 8 weeks, depending on stocking and media. Rinse sponges in old tank water, not tap water, so you keep the good bacteria, and replace carbon about once a month.

Question 6

Do I need a canister filter with a UV sterilizer?

Accepted Answer

Not always, but UV helps control green water and free floating algae. The Sunsun HW-303B, Aquatop CF-400UV and Polar Aurora all include a 9 watt UV sterilizer.
