Question 1

What is the best algae scraper?

Accepted Answer

It depends on your tank. For big glass tanks, our top magnetic pick is the Gulfstream Mag-Float 400 because it floats when the magnets separate and includes a blade. For scraping by hand, our top manual pick is the Flipper Platinum, which is safe on glass and acrylic. Always match the scraper to your tank material and wall thickness.

Question 2

What is the best algae scraper for acrylic tanks?

Accepted Answer

Use a scraper made for acrylic, with plastic blades or soft pads only. The Flipper magnet cleaners come with a plastic blade for acrylic, the Mag-Float AGU360A is made for acrylic tanks, and the Flipper Platinum hand scraper uses a card blade that is acrylic safe. Never use a metal blade on acrylic.

Question 3

Magnetic vs manual algae scraper: which is better?

Accepted Answer

Neither is better for every tank. Magnetic scrapers keep your hands dry and make regular cleaning of large tanks fast. Manual scrapers cost less, give you more control in corners and near the substrate, and are often handy for small tanks. Many fish keepers own one of each.

Question 4

Can I use a metal algae scraper blade on an acrylic tank?

Accepted Answer

No. Stainless steel blades will scratch acrylic. Use them only on glass, and switch to a plastic blade or acrylic-safe pad for acrylic tanks.

Question 5

How often should I replace algae scraper blades?

Accepted Answer

It depends on how often you clean and how much algae there is. Replace a blade when it gets nicked or stops cutting cleanly, since a damaged edge can scratch. As a rough guide, some owners change Flipper blades every few months, and more often on heavily used tanks.

Question 6

Will a magnetic algae scraper work on thick glass?

Accepted Answer

Only if it is rated for that thickness. Each magnetic cleaner lists the wall thickness it supports, so measure your glass or acrylic and choose a size made for it. Larger models like the Flipper Max are made for thicker walls.
